To the hurting hearts...

A yearning heart

Has little rest

The aching throb

Of loneliness

Seeking comfort

In the pain

Needing sunshine

Feeling rain

Dwelling by

The tombs of fear

Praying comfort

Might come near

Heavy songs

Flow through my head

They carry me

By tiny threads

Back to Him

Who holds my heart

The One who's been there

From the start

Jesus grip

My trembling hand

I can't see You

I can't stand

Give me strength

Lend Your touch

Take away

What hurts so much

Grant new mercy

Send fresh grace

Pour it o'er

My tear-stained face

Hold me up

With Your strong arm

Walk me through

This raging storm

I will trust

That You are there

That I am safe

Within Your care

True, true true. Perfect example is teaching my grandchildren. Encouraging, coaxing, explaining, giving examples: it doesn't matter whether it's something to warn them about (thorns on roses, and cars in the street, and parking lots); or teaching them about perseverance (riding their tricycles up the hilly driveway learning to use their muscles to pedal and having a blast flying back down the drive); or watching silly Roadrunner cartoons learning about farce and humor; or reading stories and listening to Grandma's voices learning a bit about interpretation and drama; or watching YouTube to learn about a capybara and the Harpejji to learn new things - life is all about being a constant learner; or playing with puzzles; playing the card game, Blink; or working on the iPad or computer (exercising the brain in various ways); or listening to all types of music, playing the piano, a harmonica, the guitar, a recorder, singing, hearing Grandpa's band, attending other concerts, pretending to conduct; or allowing them to make mistakes to learn from them; or taking tractor rides exploring the back yard and watching and listening to wildlife and learning the names of flowers and trees; or watching videos of themselves to forge memories of the moments; or helping Grandma plant flowers and vegetables to see how things grow and taking delight in the harvest; taking a trip to the grocery store to help Grandma shop and getting a treat - just because ...; or going to the hardware store with Grandpa just for fun and to take a ride and learning about different kinds of lumber and tools.
And always saying please and thank you (for breakfast in the morning and all meals and anything else they want or receive - whether they asked for it or not); generally being polite (requesting and not demanding); being willing to share; caring about how others feel and showing compassion (handing Grandma her cane when they notice her favoring one leg); learning patience (when Grandma has to buckle them into and out of their car seats, or if she can't run after them as quickly as they'd like); receiving hugs and kisses and giving them in return; knowing they are important and loved because they are always met with excitement from their grandparents when they arrive, and see we are genuinely interested in what is important to them.
These are all things that while not always speaking about God or Jesus to them (because their little minds cannot fully understand the concept - as most adults find difficulty with it as well)- does show them who He is and what kind of persons He would like us to be and become.
And as they continue to grow and learn, they will learn about Him, too.

"Every song that I write comes from my own personal experience.  i believe the role of an artist is to interpret reality through a system of beliefs and a long-term seeking of truth, in your own life and in the world at large."  Dan Folgelberg
